Buhay Bio

BS Bio students should be able to remember a lot of stuff in order to get through life. Processes, cycles, chemical formula, equations, solutions, scientific names, and tons of facts make up most of our every growing vocabulary. Let me use this skill or innate human function to remember the best memories in my biology courses.

Bio 11
- First bio subject which I only got during second year, unlike the new curriculum which offers the course for freshmen
- I got sick during finals week! It was the first time that I had to go through the paper work just to get a make-up exam.  There's a new procedure for this, and I don't need to know about it now.
- Fascinated by the experiment with photosynthesis. The plant in a tube that produces bubbles, and another experiment involving a tube, a straw and a pH indicator.
- Tried to pith a frog

Bio 12
- Forever with the poor drawing
- A lot of scientific names
- First failing mark in a long exam (first or second), recovered with a 80+ exam in the genetics and ecology part
- Onchorynchus tshawytscha, Plasmodium falciparum, Cnemidophorus uniparens
- Pangalan nito
- Wacky lab prof
- Special report on Drosophila because I served as a color bearer during Gawad Chancellor Awards
- Always late for lab period because I had Physics
- Ecological succession, hay infusion!

Bio 180
- Frequently sleeping during lectures, regardless of prof
- Terrible seatworks!
- Histograms, the classes and the 0.5s

Bio 115
- The botanical terms for plant morphology
- Seeing the different plants up close, and knowing them a little better
- Cananga odorata, Magnifera indica, Bauhenia purpurea, Ixodes, Ixora, Saccharum officinarum, Pterocarpus, Dipterocarpus
- My love for the herbarium
- Lecture report was fun, new topic and a special groupmate
- Fun field trip! Strong rains, electricity gone and fieldwork under nimbus

Bio 118
- Catch the 150!
- Same lec and lab prof!
- Fun fieldtrip! During my birthday! Spent it with great friends. Family went to LB, ate at Max. Enjoyed all field work, amazed by IRRI! Stayed at TREES, the isolated one. Played fun games at night and caught a lot of insects! Met a grade school friend!
- Failed to oven-dry some insects that i submitted, so i guess my insect box really stunk, sorry Sir :))
- Unlimited ipis, dissection!
- Learned to catch butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies with my bare hands
- Became less scared of living organisms
- Odonata, Orthoptera, Collembola, Formica, Hymenoptera, Blattodea, Reduvidae, Grylloblattodea, Brachycera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Mantodea, Phasmatodea, Bombylidae, Lampyridae, Cicada, Isoptera, Neuroptera, Thysanura

Bio 120 Take 1
- Hell in lec, sleeping time during lab
- Washing glass ware never felt this good, and at the same time life threatening
- Began disinfecting surfaces everywhere, and all the skills needed for microbiology
- Ubiquity of microorganism
- Helicobacter, Brucella, Leptospira interrograns, Bordetella, Yersina pestis, Xanthomonas, Epulopiscium fishelsoni
- Walanf magagawa yung lab grade mo
- Unang singko
- Beware of malachite green

Bio 101
- Drawing forever
- Ipomea batatas
- Sobrang daming cambium, xylem, phloem

Bio 102
- For me, the worst bio course I took. Bad lec and lab performance
- Lec, sleep sleep. Only got my book for the second exam and the following exams. Failed to read the book, so I got low on exams.
- Teeth pattern, appendage pattern, cranial nerves, the parade of organisms
- For lab, I enjoyed the dissections, but dreaded the exams up to every question and result
- Cat's name was Pussy Cat Balls, i forgot if that was ours =)), had only one contaminated cat
- Skinned a cat for an extra time, almost had a perfect brain extraction! Cats were swimming in wiping solution and sometimes concentrated formalin
- Cat review at blockmates house, slept again.
- Did not have fun with the shark and the laterality of bones, apart from the rest of the lab topics.
- Locker 66 was born

Bio 150
- A whole new world, always late for early lecture classes
- Didn't have a copy of the book until the second exam
- Lab period was easier, fun groupmates
- First time to drop a subject, had to heed the advice of the lecturers. Kinda regret.
- Dr. Kandel's lecture, professor's distinct jokes and laugh
- Lab classes without a whiteboard marker! We have but it doesn't write!
- Beware of the EtBr

Bio 121
- I had to take this early since my thesis was on Plant Physio
- Enjoyed the lecture and lab, greenhouse trips! Best experiment was the nutrient testing.
- I accidentally dropped the contents of one chlorophyll extract tube, and I didn't tell my groupmates. I reported the readings were bad.

- I forgot my report in the lec, plant hormones ata. Ethylene and Giberrelins
- Favorite topic: Stress Physiology

Bio 122 (shit i forgot to add this)
- Enjoyed lec class very much, galing ng lecturer. Topics were not boring because of him, but at times I kept my eyes shut for some uncontrollable factor. A lot of applications or you get to have this "ohh" realizations
Bitin raw lagi yung lec time, pero minsan tumatagal o maaga nagsisimula. Was not happy with my performance.
- Enjoyed lab classes as well. Two instructors. Fun experiments, even tried to mimic them outside the lab.
- Fun messing around with frog muscles and organs. Bottomless pithing!
- The blood, the worms, the oxygen, the LabPro and the exercises for the LabPro experiment. Napa-squat thrust for science!

Bio 140
- Minsan natutulog sa lec, our prof usually has a story about his laptop wallpaper
- A lot of paper work for lab classes. Chromosome cutting, rules and laws of inheritance, probabilities.
- Onion experiment! Pepsi pogi! tried to count the onion cells by myself
- A lot of incest situations in our written exercises

Bio 196
- Had to attend seminars, porma porma din kapag Friday

- Synthesis paper about Bacteriophages and wrote about Chlorobium
- Most useful lessons in life are seen in this course

Bio 132
- Best subject, best lecturer, best instructor! So much inspired by my lecture prof, but the urge to keep quiet and let your knowledge inside me was strong. Recited every now and then. Got fine marks in lec and lab exams, no failing grades!

- Wait wait, Slideeees, the anatomically correct heart and the perfect pig representation

Bio 200
- Ayoko na balikan. Please lang =))

Paper paper

I thought a lot about you during my senior and last year as an undergraduate. In the beginning, there were too much things going on in school. There was the biggest one that I failed, and another that I wished I hadn't drop. These choices weren't easy to go by, and along the way, I had to deal with a lot of things.

I had to take a break from things and began thinking of you this June. The fear of not being accepted was evident, as conditions, which were great obstacles, made us all hesitant to push through with the task. I kept on looking at pictures that could have been more significant in the end.

This month, I had nothing and no one else in mind. Such magic filled me up the first time I saw you, but then again that joy was probably only mine. I'll wait for the next time I can come back to you.

My bound thesis manuscript along with the three letter-sized copies (made by mistake).

Ang ID

Pwedeng identifier, identity document or identification card.

1. Wala.

Naiisip ko, kayang kaya ng taga-UP na itabi ang ID sa anumang bagay na lagi nyang dinadala sa UP. Underwear o cellphone.

Hindi bagay sa damit? Pangit sa pakiramdam? Namamaho yung strap o lanyard?

2nd Sem AY1213 and 1st Sem AY1314 schedule.

Strike ahead

Waiting for two more grades (PI 100 and PE 2)

Lessons, lessons. Find time, don't waste time.

Ballroom dance?

My favorite professional wrestler, maybe next to the Rock or Stone Cold

PI 100 - Rizal 100 +1

Mas namangha ako kina Rizal at Bonifacio. Astig. Gaano kadalas na may mabalitaan kang kasing husay nila?

the women of Malolos. Rizal wrote a letter to them. It contained praises and a lot of guides and reminders.

Worried at midnight, Manila twilight

The morning arrives at the next minute, but you notice it's approach hours after.

I worry about getting lost. I thought that I already convinced myself of continuing to Medicine. I wonder so much on this development that doesn't seem to end. Although, I probably told myself that a career in research wouldn't be that bad.

For now, I'm not that bothered about losing my interest in med, but I am not aware of the influences I may give into when it comes to the next semester. It will come to a point that I might decide, that may leave the other choice behind or hanging. A hanging career doesn't look good, and it might lead to switches!

More questions. These open up time for you because committing definitely shuts down the clock.

How decisive can you be? Up to what level, time or stage in your life can you be firm with choices nearby, at the corner or there at your blind spot.

The common tune is to be happy or find happiness

Time shifts. Sunrise a second earlier, and sunset's a minute late. Flip the coin for dusk and dawn. Find the balance and seek the twilight.

Why 07 October Was a Good Day

In bullets

  • had a good night's sleep
  • had pancakes for breakfast
  • had a good jeepney ride
  • had caramel sundae
  • was able to help some PUP students
    • initially I was thinking of getting of at Faculty Center, go to CS lib and proceed with the rest of my plan, then:

      • the person beside me asked if I knew where the Institute of Biology was. i replied with "doon pa". with such a vague answer I think i was obliged to either tell where exactly (assuming that i stuck to my plan) or i'd change my route just to guide them personally
      • i decided to go ahead and show them where IB was
      • i asked the girl who asked me (there was another one wearing a PUP PE pants), anong year niyo na. she replied: "2nd year na po". prior to that they said they needed to use a microtome. i had no follow-up questions, then a question hit my mind. were they college students or just high school students taking up biology-science classes. probably highschool students ( it's difficult to recognize a female 2nd year student nowadays)
  • a professor that doesn't usually initiates conversation, tried to get my attention and talked to me
  • bought and ate sour tape
  • saw a person and almost had an awkward encounter, didn't know if i should have smiled or said hi
  • saw a strange bird and strange larva across MSI
  • had a good time staying at the CSLib watching Pacific Rim
  • had a good talk with a batchmate
  • got a good score in my exam
    • when i was calculating for my probable grade before i got the results, i guessed the number 70.
    • tada! i got 70 for that exam. i wish I used a higher number when i tried to estimate my grades
  • rode an ikot jeep that drove me all the way to central. he was probably going to a gas station
  • dropped by a coffee shop. bought a new drink and was able to buy a cheesecake cookie
  • won a great game using Tempest 7/0/high assists. awesome sets for my ulti
  • watched a nice film, The East
  • ate a good barbecue "meal" for dinner
  • watched this again http://samuel-warde.com/2013/09/craziest-footage-youll-see-captured-security-cameras-video/

[rePubliched] never let go of the radio

[ mula sa multiplx]
nakatutuwa.

Pucha. The Top 20 @ 12!

Boys Night Out! Yeahhhhhhmen!

Magic 89.9 Today's Best Music, indeed.

That's it, we're done, we hope you had some fun. Join us next time on, the Campus Radio... flyer

Happy Times Double_back

(was supposed to post this last year, probably the same time)

What I learned from some of my advisers, moderators and teachers.

and some memories.

AAM
T. Lourdes (Adviser - Sibika) - it's important to be competitive, against yourself and others. Support from your moderator is really great as it motivates you to beat the other class! At that time, I had a rival in the other class. We always were on a 1-2 streak; him being top of the batch.

T. Amy (Prep Adviser - Grade 1 Science) - discipline is best inculcated at a young age. I always cut my nails after a year with her!

S. Martin (G6 Adviser - Science) - courting is preparation for marriage. How to use a microscope properly! He probably also inspired me to be a biologist (one of the people). One of the teachers who I considered a good friend!

T. Kristina (Grade 6 - English) - earn you grades, the value of knowledge over grades. The scenario was: "You automatically get 90 on your card, or you go to class and get whatever mark."

A salute to all the teachers in the Philippines! A snappier salute for those who became part of my life!

A salute to all the teachers in the Philippines. A snappier salute to those who were part of my life!

AHS
Mr. Capinding ( 1st Year Moderator - Filipino) - give it your all, "lundagin mo beybe!". My first moderator during my stay in Ateneo.

Mr. Dizon (2nd Year Moderator - Math) - always reward yourself "bumili ka ng sundae". The time where i loved numbers, the grades loved me as well!

Mr. Santos (3rd Year Moderator - Araling Panlipunan) - don't do the unecessary "ano connect nun?".

Mrs. Sacluti (4th Year Moderator - Math) - be responsible and be ready to face any consequence "magkaroon kayo ng bayag!"

Mr. Villena (3rd Year Filipino) - learn to accept criticism,"GAGO ka pala e"

Mr. Nolasco (4th Science - Physics) - be prepared or "get-out"

Ms. De Mesa (2nd Year Science - Biology) - My best inspiration to becoming a biologist (no relation yet to Medicine), and the first subject where i got an A!

Mr. Falgui (1st Year English) - don't lose hope. First year high school, i got the only failing mark in high school, a D (69 and below) in English.

Mr. Pavia (3rd Year Christian Living Ed) - everything morally right about me, and to read the book at least four times!

UP

Mr. Agpawan (Philo- Logic) - examine the logic and make sure that you know your choices!

Mrs. Jacinto (Animal Dev Bio) - learn to articulate your thoughts, study well, think critically! Hands down, the best teacher or the best one in the Institute of Biology. I loved the course (meaning the subject), and it was the only one that I studied my arse off!

Mrs. Apilado (Kasaysayan) - be a good student, and do not sleep in class!

Mrs. Cao (Cell Bio) - if you have to sleep in class, be sure that you know the lesson and you could answer questions in class. I was sleeping in one of her classes, then i heard this while I was freely sleeping at the back of the room: "Mr Macrohon, do you know/have an answer to the question?" Me: "No, ma'am". After a while, she asked another question and I threw the correct answer like a boss :)

Ms. Gonzales (Biology Fundamentals and Ecology) - always have an answer and know what you are doing!

Mr. Yago (General Chem) - something about credibility and responsibility of students

Mr. Garcia (Geography) - the concept of personal space and places of despair

Mr. Solis (Physics Lab) - naghihintay ang NAGMAMAHAL!

Mr. Garcia (Animal Physiology) - another good lecturer, the best in Bio too. He had this way of teaching concepts and the pace and voice was just right..pero minsan natutulog ako. This was the time that I wished that he taught other subjects.

Mr. Hernandez, Mr, Suiza, Mr. Tan-Tian (Engineering Science) - madami pero halos naging part-time manners class yung ES 10. Valuing yourself, spirit of Christmas, concept of gifts, character building stories and tips, etc.

I wasn't able to place all, but surely I learned something from every subject i took! Hehe. Sana walang magtampo.
